We are pleased to announce the opening of ‘Facing up to the Muses’, an exhibition exploring Tony Harrison’s work in theatre. The exhibition is in the Education Room of the Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery, and will run until 16 June.

Tony Harrison is Britain’s leading poet-playwright. He has written and directed popular and influential works for over 50 years.  Harrison has been consistently innovative, whether translating classical drama into the vernacular or creating ‘kamikaze’ site-specific single performances. He has worked with key figures in theatre, whilst remaining true to his singular poetic vision.

This exhibition uses objects from Harrison’s literary archive in Special Collections These allow us to explore the development and sheer variety of Harrison’s work in theatre.

This exhibition focuses on five plays from Harrison’s body of work and explores their development and performance in detail. Many other works are represented by the framed posters and flyers on display.

Tony Harrison will be delivering the third annual Sheppard Memorial event at Stage@Leeds on 1st June. The event will include readings and performance from Harrison himself, Sian Thomas and Barrie Rutter. Tickets will shortly be on sale via Eventbrite.
